Confluent Maine has the unique ability to “condition” the inside of extruded tubing, heavy wall welded tubing and tubular components. By tube conditioning, we mean that our machinists can improve the concentricity of these parts, correcting eccentricity by drilling a new ID in relation to the outside diameter of the part. Confluent Maine can often do this without needing to remove additional material from the OD. This cost-effective method of improving input tube hollows or mill produced tubing can yield considerable cost savings when working with expensive alloys.
For example, Confluent Maine has gun drilled long extruded Titanium hollows, improving wall uniformity from over 10% to less than 3%, while removing less than .050” from the OD. The result for the customer was a significant cost savings since they were not required to purchase Titanium bar stock to initiate the project.
Tube conditioning represents an attractive machining option for customers who want to reduce weight in aerospace components after they have performed work on a part’s OD.
